An Introduction to Cafe Random
Cafe Random was established by a group of local young people and members of the Wiveliscombes Key Members Group who were interested in developing and improving services for young people in the area. Funding was awarded from Somerset County Council inenhance the facilities at the youth centre and provide a Youth Cafe for young people. Young people were then trained to participate in the running of the youth cafe and have since used the space for youth sessions, youth events, fundraisers, youth projects, activities and training opportunities for young people and adults alike.
In the very early days Cafe Random opened on Tuesdays following the end of the Kingsmead School day, Cafe Random also opened on Friday evenings, and continued to provide the cafe, as well as additional activities such as karaoke and other themed events. Both sessions were attended by a wide range of young people, as the cafe grew, news of this service spread to other young people who had obtained knowledge about our existence, and thus more people attended on a regular basis.
After high volumes of young people started attending regularly, we opened lunchtime sessions for students during the lunch hour at Kingsmead School, which was a great success. On some days up to 100+ young people accessed the centre and the cafe, due to this high impact of young people accessing the sessions, Cafe Random lunchtime sessions were spilt into year groups, to prevent over crowding and allow youth work staff to work with smaller groups of young people.
Cafe Random now provides young people with a warm and safe space to socialise with friends and relax, it offers the opportunity for young people to access information and support from professional youth work staff and take part in interesting and engaging activities. Located at The Base Youth Centre, Wiveliscombe, the cafe contains comfy seating and chill spaces, as well as cafe tables. The cafe is set up for the ultimate cafe experience including a professional coffee machine and top of the range kitchen equipment, we provide a snack and food menu, and have access to games, activities and internet access. Regular weekly sessions are available, please check our what's on page for more information.
Cafe Food & Drink
The cafe has a menu of food and drink available for young people to buy from during cafe sessions, which is ran by staff and eventually, the aim is for young leaders to run the kitchen. Some of the items that we offer include pizza slices, toasties, toast, pasta, hot chocolate and coffee among other food and drink. Profits made from the kitchen are put back into the organisation for delivery.
